An Edge of Pink

It snowed again today…not much, but enough to break our twelve day streak of not seeing white stuff fall from the sky.  Still, I refuse to let it get me down.  I’ve got it on good pretense that spring is about to break out and send winter packing.  I wasn’t sure whether to believe it - until yesterday when I saw an edge of pink.

Inlaid

It warmed up into the upper 30’s today so, out I went, looking for any excuse to get a few new images.

Even with the warmup, I looked around and still saw plenty of signs of how brutal this winter has been for the Midwest.  I just don’t recall ever seeing the lakes this frozen over before.

Luckily, spring is just a few weeks away and I can’t wait to turn my camera from all this snow and ice to the new growth of flowers, grass, and trees.  But, when in Rome…

Winter Green

You have to look pretty hard to find anything green around here once winter settles in.  If it weren’t for the boughs of the evergreen trees the world as I know it would be nothing but white and brown.

So when I see a touch of green this time of year, I feel compelled to photograph it…to memorize it…to drink it in.  Another month from now and green will be popping up everywhere but, for now, I cling to winter’s only green - the needles of the mighty pine.

Hip To Be Square

It’s freezing again (literally) so I had to find something to photograph INSIDE again tonight.  I pulled out the new 100mm macro lens and headed down the hall to shoot the colorful squares my mom pieced together to make my quilted wall-hanging.

I ended up setting the lens to “bulb” and then dragging the camera across several of the squares, going from color to color and pattern to pattern.  Several of the shots turned out pretty interesting but this one was far and away my favorite.  If you look closely, you can see the lines where the squares meet up in rows…

Frozen Feather

It finally rose above the bitter cold temperatures of the past two weeks so I bundled up and headed out to my favorite lake first thing this morning.  What is normally a busy suburban lake full of ducks, Canada Geese and even a heron or two was nothing but an iced-over abandoned field.  The only signs of the busy aviary landing strip was this lone feather, stuck frozen to a twig.

Mosquito Minimalism

I’ve been reading a bit on minimalism as it applies to photography lately so when I saw this mosquito hiding behind the spoon rest on my stovetop this morning I took a shot and tried my hand at it.

Even though the photo was basically a black bug on a white stovetop I still had to convert it to b&w because of the incandescent glow of the indoor lighting.  Then I pumped up the contrast and positioned him off center and that was about it!
