Backyard Beauty

The only thing more numerous in my backyard than the dandelions are the wild violets.  I know I should probably put down chemicals to stop all this from coming up but I hate doing that to the environment and, dang it, they are just so darn pretty…

Gerbera Daisies

If you know me well, you know my love for Gerberas.  Every spring I cannot wait for these lovely potted plants to show up at storefronts, ready to take home and brighten up my day.

And if you know of my love for the flower itself, then you must also know of my intense love for photographing them.  They are wonderful subjects for letting the light peek through their petals.

Extreme Makeover

This orchid just begged for something radical.  “Make me look hip.  Make me appear intense and fashion forward.

Okay I said.  You want extreme?  I’ll give you extreme!

Presenting The Extreme Orchid.

Lightbulb Moment

I was photographing some of my first tulips this past weekend and was getting some nice images - nice but rather ordinary.  Then I went to change the water in the glass of flowers and I looked at the light coming down from the kitchen window into the stainless steel sink and thought, “I wonder…”

Who knew a sink could be so beautiful?

Hot Lips

It’s tulip time!  I’ve got several plants budding and two that are right on the cusp of opening up.  Today’s soaking rain that is slated for later this morning ought to just about push them into full bloom.

Today’s photo is the prelude of what’s to come - just a kiss of red on the lips as she waits to unfurl her undeniable, bodacious beauty.

So Simple

One of my favorite blog reads, Confessions of a Pioneer Woman, has a new blog page devoted just to her photography.  She’s got a new set of Actions free for the taking that work in conjunction with Photoshop CS3 if you’re interested and one of those actions is called “B&W Beauty.”  Boy, howdy.  A couple of clicks and, suddenly, looking at daffodil photos took on a whole new perspective.

I have a collection of black and white actions that I use now and again but this one has a really soft edge to it and plenty of ways to tweak it when the action is done running.  What fun!

New Life

I noticed for the first time the other day how curvy the edges of a tulip leaf can be.  I have some varieties that are straight as sticks but others that curve and curl from end to tip.

It was this image that really got me thinking about it, though…the curve of the leaf compared to the curve of a woman’s body…the plant bringing new life to this year’s crop of tulips…it seems that nature follows form from one species to another, eh?
