Two By Two

I took my new Canon 70-200mm f/4 L lens for a spin today, trying to see what all it could do. I think I’m going to need a 300mm or 400mm telephoto if I’m going to get really serious about taking bird images in the wild but, considering this lens is lightweight enough that I can handhold it in good light, I’m really not complaining. Besides, look at the pattern of the tree reflection on the water that this baby created.

Be still my beating heart…

I have a 70-300 mm lense - and even that is so often too short. If you have a lense that’s powerful enough when it comes to exposure (and I think f4 is), you can use a teleconverter with it to bring the targets closer.

I’m sort of dreaming of a Canon 100-400 mm lense, but with that it’s tripod work most of the time… Lenses without zoom give you a lot sharper photos, but if you have a (prime?) lense of 400 mm you can’t shoot targets that are too close. It’s a downside. But after seeing the results from my 60 mm macro I’m spoiled when it comes to photo quality…

I have a 70-300 too Jules and a lot of the time, I am thinking - if only I could get closer! I think I need to learn to be quieter, so I don’t scare the birds so much! I love this picture - you inspire me every day!

Eija, that teleconverter is on my wish list already! That would be just what I need to get me that little bit closer…and you’re right…anything bigger and it’s break out the tripod time. UGH.

Dlyn, I went back to this same lake this afternoon and they were so much friendlier…really great about letting me get close and “be” in the middle of them all. It took some time for them to accept me but once they did it was so worth it!

Jules, you photo is perfectly perfect. Funny you are talking about telephotos. My 70-300 mm came in the mail a few days ago.
If it ever warms, I’m ready to see what it can do. Actually, it’s more like what I can do.
    Anyway, I’m pretty excited.

Oh Barbara, is there nothing more exciting than a new camera lens? I can’t wait to see what you do with it!
