While traipsing around the cemetery yesterday I walked right up on a huge bronze cross. I’m working on collecting some images for my church’s “Walk to the Cross” that we put on over Good Friday and this cross is no doubt going to end up being one of the images I submit. I photoshopped in a corner glare that also darkened the edges of the two sides. In my mind’s eye, it represents the moment Christ died on the cross. Now, I’m just looking for ways to make it better. Any ideas?

Fascinating… But I’d like to see the original version! I’m rather disturbed by the burned corner of light – it takes too much attention of the picture. You could try giving some more light and contrast to the details of the cross. I’m not sure if it would work or not, but it might take the focus more on the cross, not the background.

The plain version is on my Flickr page (I think…I might have to double check that!) But you need to remember that if I use this for the Walk to the Cross, I’m trying to convey the point in time when Christ died on the cross…that’s my purpose for the light behind the cross (representing God looking on) and the dark on the edges of the photo (because the bible says the sky grew dark.) Otherwise, no I never would have done this effect to this degree on this particular photo.
Does that make more sense?

Yeah, I get your point… And the background is really good and efficient. Just that the lightest spot is too light for my taste – it burns my eye and doesn’t allow me to look at the photo as whole so I’d dim it considerably (just the corner though) – although God shouldn’t be dimmed, I know… *grin* The cross stands out well, but I personally would perhaps try to make it still a bit more radical. Just to see how it would work.
Years ago I’ve written a poem that says something about the cross being “heavy and dark” and this image reminds me very vividly of that. Even if you won’t process it anymore, it’s a striking image. Just tried to ask you some ideas to try, since you asked

Thanks for the feedback Eija! I just wanted to make sure you understood the intent of the photo because otherwise I would agree – the light is too bright and the dark corner is too dark – but I think for this intent, it might just work. I’m still going to play with it a little…see what I can do…so I appreciate your honest feedback.

I love it, especially the light and dark on the top, but I think the cross itself needs to “pop” more. It seems sort of plastic-y to me. I also think that the light spot should be bigger…and should overtake the dark spot. (symbolism, no?)
